Fishing on the Gunflint Trail

The Gunflint Trail offers some of the finest fishing spots year round. Stocked and native fish travel these cold deep waters, fast rivers, and shallow lakes. Experts and beginners can get their lines wet in some of the cleanest, clearest waters in the world.

Check in with the local outfitters and fishing guides for information on where, when, and even how. Fishing opener in 2022 is May 14th, and you’ll need a fishing license if you are 16 or older.

Lakes both in and outside the Boundary Waters are waiting for you to explore,

Fishing licenses are available at service stations along Highway 61, stop in while fueling your vehicle and also ask about which bait to bring. Several stores in Grand Marais have both live bait and lures. On the Gunflint Trail there’s a bait store called Ugly Baby Bait, and many of the Resorts and Outfitters carry both live bait and tackle.

Make sure your watercraft and trailer is free from plants and invasive species. Rockwood Lodge and Outfitters offers a free invasive species boat wash.
